Complete set, in three volumes. John Gillies (1747-1836), eminent historian and classical scholar, held the post of Royal historiographer for Scotland and was a member of numerous learned societies. His most popular work was "History of Greece" (pub. 1786); The history of the world: 3 vols. I: xv, [1], 503 pp. II: viii, 566 pp. III: viii, 483, [48] pp. Shaw & Shoemaker 17632. An excellent look throughout the history of the world specifically pertaining to Greece. Famous battles and important moments in Greek history are discussed, Alexanders conquests, Greek Politics, religious wars with Jews, Perseus, Pompey, Successors, and history of Greek Kingdoms in Asia and Africa. A fantastic early look at Greek history.
Condition: 19th-century full sheep, spines with gilt titles on red leather labels, gilt rules and volume numbers. Vol I & II covers loosening, writing on blank pages-all three volumes, minor spotting/ light age browning throughout, overall a great set for being almost 200 years old.
