Gertrud & Otto Natzler Studio Pottery Early G & O Mark

A signed G & O Natzler wafer-thin ceramic bowl with a beautiful chartreuse color glaze. It measures 2" tall by 6" in diameter. Notice the slight color variation around the wafer-thin rim of the bowl.
No chips or repairs. Sits flat and evenly on a table. A very fine line - like a tight hairline - measuring about 1" in length in the glaze of the center bottom. It does not extend through to the other side of the bowl. I can only see it with magnification. Difficult to see in our last photo, but something to be mentioned just the same. Fine crazing is considered normal and attributed to the artistic hand of the Natzlers.

Gertrud and Otto Natzler arrived in America in late 1938, leaving their home in Vienna, Austria as Germany invaded. They had an extraordinary and fruitful collaboration by development and refinement of their art.
-
Famous for their jewel-like colors suspended in rich, luminous glazes, the Natzlers worked in their Los Angeles studio, where Gertrud would synthesize clay into form, while Otto would be the glaze and firing technician.
Gertrud’s elegant forms and Otto’s superb glazes grace the collections of over fifty museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Seattle Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution, the Victoria and Albert Museum and dozens of others.

Regarding the G & O mark on the bottom of this Natzler studio pottery bowl: Quoting Otto Natzler’s personal annotations in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1968 Catalog of Collections of Mrs. Leonard Sperry - Form and Fire - (page 50):
“The pieces – all of our ceramics – are signed Natzler, the only exception being those signed “G & O Natzler, as are most pieces before 1943”.
From the Los Angeles Times April, 2007 obituary for Otto Natzler by Claudia Luther: “But it was the O&G works, as they were sometimes called that secured the Natzler name in art history”.
