Action & Atmosphere from one of Europe's finest 'rolling museums'

Fancy a spot of 'joie de vivre'? a little 'je ne sais quoi'? If you appreciate the elegance and power of classic sportscars, social camaraderie, the delights of gastronomy and picturesque scenery, the 1996 Tour de France Auto combined all these entertaining ingredients in one memorable event.

Over the fifty-five years that it has run the Tour de France Auto has become known as one of the finest 'rolling museums' in Europe, featuring some of the most famous plates in automobile history. In 1996 more than 180 superb classic cars lined up for the four day rally from Paris to Nice, including Porsches, Cobras, GT40s, Austin Healey 3000s, E-Type Jags and more than 40 Ferraris. But this was not simply a rally for appearance's sake. As the convoy toured south the teams took part in a number of timed special stages, hillclimbs and four circuit outings on historic racetracks such as Le Mans and Mas du Clos. Not all the entrants would make it to the finish as the packed schedule took its toll, but the overall award was a welcome bonus for one pre-65 winner in addition to the sheer pleasure of simply competing in this nostalgic event.
