Profanity

eBay does not allow the use of profanity or patently vulgar language in a public area of the site. This includes the use of language that is racist, hateful, sexual or obscene in nature.

eBay will permit media titles and descriptions (such as a CD name and track list) that contain profanity on the main site and in Adult Only. This profanity is only permitted if the original production company title or description contains the profane terms. All other profanity is prohibited. This exception applies to media items and does not apply to any other items.

Sellers should carefully review the ‘Some Examples’ and ‘Additional Information’ sections below before listing and adhere to all the policies outlined.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

  • Listing cancellation

  • Limits on account privileges

  • Account suspension

  • Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

  • Loss of PowerSeller status

Some Examples

Permitted:

  • An original production company music CD with profanity in some of the song titles.

Not Permitted:

  • Profanity in the title or description used to describe the item being sold.

Additional Information

All items listed must abide by our policies regarding adult items as outlined in our Adult Only Policy.

If a feedback comment contains profanity, please review our feedback removal policy and submit a request for removal.

Please report any violations of this policy to the correct area for review:

  • Report offensive language on the Chat, Help, or Discussion Boards by clicking on the “Report” link/button on the individual post

Note: Posts made in eBay’s Want It Now area must also comply with this policy. Want It Now posts that violate this policy may be removed. You can report a Want It Now violation of this policy from the Want It Now Policies page.

Why does eBay have this policy?

eBay is a community, and members of a community must respect each other as human beings. Listings, feedback, Want It Now posts, or posts in other public areas of the site that promote hate, violence or racial intolerance (or organizations dedicated to such notions) or contain profanity have no place in a true community. Since eBay is a place to trade, do business, and have fun with each other, it will not become a platform for profanity or for those who promote hatred toward their fellow man.
